The stone that was used in the mask of faro Toetanchamon: Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is seen by many people all over the world as the stone of friendship. The blue Lapis Lazuli is said to encourage harmony in friendships and relationships and helps the wearer to be authentic and to speak with an open heart.

Lapis Lazuli was a favorite stone of the Ancient Egyptians. As a sign wisdom and responsibility judges in Ancient Egypt had to wear pendants of lapis lazuli. The stone was also used in the mask of faro Toetanchamon.

Most Lapiz Lazuli in Ancient times was brought from the North Afghanistan province of Badakhshan. Still the finest Lapis Lazuli is found in the Kokcha valley area in Afghanistan, an isolated terrain above the Kokcha River.

Another area where a lot of Lapis lazuli is found is the Flores de los Andes mine near the city of Ovalle in Chili which is located at an altitude of 12,500 feet in the Andes Mountains. Lapis Lazuli was discovered in this area in 1851. The stone was chosen as national Stone in Chili on September 20, 1984.

Lapis Lazuli in a grinded form was used in paintings in the Renaissance. This blue pigment, was known as ultramarine and particularly used in Italian wall paintings and to illuminate manuscripts. The blue ultramarine, was the main component in the pigment used in the Sistine Chapel.
