Lapis
lazuli is seen by many people all over the world as the stone of friendship.
The blue Lapis Lazuli is said to encourage harmony in friendships and relationships
and helps the wearer to be authentic and to speak with an open heart.
Lapis Lazuli
was a favorite stone of the Ancient Egyptians. As a sign wisdom and responsibility
judges in Ancient Egypt had to wear pendants of lapis lazuli. The stone was
also used in the mask of faro Toetanchamon.
Most Lapiz Lazuli in Ancient times was
brought from the North Afghanistan province of Badakhshan. Still the finest
Lapis Lazuli is found in the Kokcha valley area in Afghanistan, an isolated terrain
above the Kokcha River.
Another
area where a lot of Lapis lazuli is found is the Flores de los Andes mine near
the city of Ovalle in Chili which is located at an altitude of 12,500 feet in the
Andes Mountains. Lapis Lazuli was discovered in this area in 1851. The stone
was chosen as national Stone in Chili on September 20, 1984.
Lapis Lazuli
in a grinded form was used in paintings in the Renaissance. This blue pigment,
was known as ultramarine and particularly used in Italian wall paintings and to
illuminate manuscripts. The blue ultramarine, was the main component in the pigment
used in the Sistine Chapel.
